Healthcare Facilities Fit for the Future
An Announcement by NHS Gloucestershire

NHS Gloucestershire are undertaking an appraisal of their Stroud estate, including Stroud General Hospital, Stroud Maternity and the Stroud GP surgeries.  They wish to ensure that “Stroud can benefit from modern, state of the art community hospital facilities”.

They will be looking at possible locations within the Town, including existing buildings and sites. We are assured that “any new facilities, such as a hospital, will be in Stroud”.

The Changing Health Service
You will be aware that during the past year there has been a great deal of discussion about the reorganisation of the National Health Service  Locally it would seem that Gloucestershire Care Services, who have been the provider arm of the NHS, will become a Social Enterprise organisation called Gloucestershire Care Services Community Interest Company (CIC). The Community Interest Company has not yet started operating pending the resolution of a legal challenge.

Stroud Maternity has transferred from Gloucestershire Care Services and is now managed by the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Commissioning of health services is still undertaken by NHS Gloucestershire but it is expected that a new commissioning organisation will be created in due course in which GPs and Hospital staff will play a major role. Into this reorganisation is infused a greater degree of competition coupled with a greater cooperation between the Health Service and Social Services, possibly more private providers some of whom may be profit making business organisations and some with a charitable ethos.

We believe that your League of Friends has to think very carefully about this new situation to ensure that we can continue to support wholeheartedly the fine staff delivering our very beneficial health services.
