History of the Stroud Hospitals and Involvement of the League of Friends

  • 1755
  • First mention of a dispensary at Stroud.
  • 1823
  • Stroud Dispensary built in Kendrick's Orchard
  • 1835
  • Dispensary enlarged to include Casualty Hospital
  • 1859
  • Dispensary and Casualty Hospital known as Stroud General Hospital
  • 1875
  • Present Stroud General Hospital Officially Opened
  • 1897
  • First X-Ray equipment installed
  • 1948
  • National Health Service was started and the League of Friends was formed
  • 1953
  • Stroud Maternity Hospital Opened
  • 1973
  • New Operating Theatre Opened with magnificent community support
  • 1975
  • Centenary of Stroud General Hospital celebrated. League of Friends help to create the Endoscopy Clinic. Now one of the best in the West.
  • 1976
  • Audiology Booth established
  • 1979
  • The Jubilee Wing was refurbished with a legacy left to the Friends by Mrs Minnie Paget and opened by H.R.H. The Duke of Gloucester
  • 1986
  • H.R.H. The Princess Anne opened The Princess Anne Wing - a joint project between the Friends and the Health Authority
  • 1992
  • The Physiotherapy Department refurbished with Friends support and opened by H.R.H. Princess Michael of Kent
  • 1993
  • The Friends work with the Severn N H S Trust to refurbish Stroud Maternity Hospital
  • 2000
  • H.R.H. The Princess Royal opened the New and Modernised Stroud General Hospital. This project was supported by a major donation from the League of Friends
